Following the 2020 Federal Election, Life Is Work has updated our Strategic Plan to ensure actions are brought forward to include TGNC People of Color. LIW Strategic Plan explains how we must advance the rights of TGNC People of Color and improve inclusion across all public services. Addressing priority areas that impact TGNC People of Color. Along with each priority area, there are tangible action items for Federal, State, and local governments to prioritize as it moves into planning for the next 2-5 years.
The action items contained in this plan are the result of extensive literature reviews, assessments of current policy and legislation, and findings LIW, along with outcomes and deliverables. The plan presents opportunities to improve on areas such as data collection, healthcare, racism, TGNC People of Color relations, accessibility, homelessness, justice reform, discrimination (federal, institutional, and social), gender equity, and poverty reduction, explicitly speaking to TGNC People of Color experience across the board. We recognize the violence and discrimination faced by the TGNC People of Color variant (“trans”) community nationally. In a recent nationwide survey, 74% of transgender youth reported experiencing verbal harassment in school, and 37% reported experiencing physical violence. TGNC People of Color individuals face unemployment over three times the national rate, and many more are underemployed. As a result of discrimination and bullying, the trans community faces high rates of mental health issues. Rates of depression are as high as two-thirds; 77% of transgender individuals report having considered suicide, and 43% have attempted suicide at least once. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28727530/
Government’s opportunity to address the violence and discrimination faced by trans individuals by introducing, passing without delay legislation that will amend the Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code to provide TGNC People of Color individuals with the same legal protections as other vulnerable groups. Within our strategic plan, each of the priority areas are presented with the action items needed to create a more inclusive America for TGNC People of Color. We are also calling on the Federal Government to establish an action plan implementation fund over five years. This funding will be allocated accordingly to enable civil society organizations to facilitate and deliver projects that respond to the action items in this plan.
